Buy a Good Man's Shirt

Like they say, it's all in the details. The same goes with a man's shirt. A well-made shirt is an investment because it wears well and lasts. When you wear it people can see the quality and it also is a luxurious gift. Here is what you look for when purchasing a good man's shirt.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tuxedo shops and small men's clothing shops usually carry good men's shirts. The shirt should be made of 100% cotton.

  2. Step 2

As you look at the shirts check the stitching. Around the collar it should be small, flat stitches. The collar should be soft and movable. Feel the collar with your hand.

  3. Step 3

A handmade button hole is a luxurious addition to a good shirt, but is extremely hard to find outside of Europe. A button hole that is horizontal instead of vertical is preferred.

  4. Step 4

Count the stitching. There should be at least 22 stitches per inch. The more the better the quality.

  5. Step 5

Soft tissue paper should be wrapped around the shirt and no cardboard or plastic. Sometimes there will be small straight pins keeping the tissue paper around the shirt.

  6. Step 6

If the shirt is patterned or stripped it should match exactly. You should not be able to tell that it is not one piece.

  7. Step 7

There should be no loose threads or unraveling material. Look inside the shirt for seams that are unevenly sewn. They should be straight.

  8. Step 8

Buttons should be hand sewn and for extra quality made of mother of pearl instead of plastic. You can tell it it is sewn on by hand because the thread will crisscross from button hole to button hole.
