Most airlines allow for points to be transferred to another person and also some airlines allow you to use your points towards the purchase of products and services.

   Me and my wife did not accumulate enough points last year to get a flight or anything expensive but the airline sent us a letter saying our points were about to expire and that we could use them for magazine subscriptions. So we now get about 10 of our favorite magazines for a year, free just for having signed up for the frequent fliers program.
