Learn how to backcomb, "tease" your hair at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • flat iron
  • bristle brush
  • rattail comb, or teasing comb
  • hair spray
  1. Step 1

Make sure all of your hair is straight, for the strands that are curly or wavy insist on flat ironing it out.

  2. Step 2

If you decided to flat iron, make sure your hair has cooled down. Strands that are warm may rip or break.

  3. Step 3

Use a bristle brush to comb out and remove tangles in your hair. When teasing it's best not to try when hair hasn't been fully detangled.

  4. Step 4

Now using a rattail or teasing comb, part off a section of hair from the rest of the strands. Clip the remaining hair out of the way.

  5. Step 5

Using your comb or brush, gather a small section of hair approximately 1-2 inches in thickness. Use smaller strands for tighter results or larger strands for looser results.

  6. Step 6

Hold the ends of the new section straight up and out from the scalp with one hand. You will be back combing/teasing your strands in the opposite direction from which your hair grows.

  7. Step 7

With the other hand, run the comb down the length of the hair from the end towards the base of the scalp in short, sharp strokes.

  8. Step 8

If you don't get enough teased hair or height in the first pass that you wish to get, repeat the process until the hair has the right fullness, height and texture.

  9. Step 9

Spray newly teased sections with some hairspray. Repeat after each new section is created.

  10. Step 10

Once the first section is completely teased, pick up the next section of hair and repeat the process until all of the desired sections of hair have been completely backcombed.

  11. Step 11

Select a firm hairspray to completely spray all of the teased hair when the backcombing is complete.

  12. Step 12

And there you go, you just learned how to tease your hair.
