Snorkeling is a unique hobby that allows you to experience an entire underwater world that many don't even know exists. Even though snorkeling does not require special licensing or training, there are a few items that you must purchase in order to get started. One of the most critical items that you need is swim fins. Although many people simply pick any swim fins, selecting the proper ones will greatly enhance your snorkeling experience.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want a full foot swim fin. These fins encompass the entire foot (do not have a heel strap) and are worn by slipping your bare foot entirely inside. Full foot fins are shorter and lighter than other types of fins and because of this they are the fins most people select when traveling to snorkeling locations.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether an adjustable heel model swim fin is more suitable. These fins are really half fins, with only the front half of the foot placed inside the fin. It is held in place by a strap that goes around the heel. If you purchase adjustable swim fins, you also must purchase booties that prevent the fins from irritating your foot and makes walking into and out of the ocean more comfortable.

  3. Step 3

Select the proper size. Full foot swim fins usually only come in men's foot sizes and do not come in half sizes. Therefore men who where a 10 1/2 shoe size should purchase a size 11 swim fin. Women should purchase one size smaller in men's shoes. For example, if a woman wears a size 8 shoe, she would purchase a man's size 7 swim fin. Heel fins usually come in sizes small, medium and large. The best way to purchase these are to try on the different sizes and see which one fits best.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the fins fit properly. Fins should be snug, but not too tight. You should also stand up and walk around in the fins to see how they feel. Make sure that you can wiggle your toes freely inside of the swim fin.

Tips & Warnings
  • When purchasing adjustable heel fins, make sure to wear a bootie with them as this will impact how tight the fins are and thus what size you need.
