How Do I Become a USDA Meat Inspector?

1. Thoroughly review the necessary qualifications. The USDA prefers applicants with either a four-year college degree or experience in food safety preparation, such as in a slaughterhouse or restaurant. See the resources section for more information.

2. Visit the USDA job portal to search for openings in your area. The USDA does not have a specialized "meat inspector." The position is "food inspector" and applies to all foods prepared for human consumption, including meats.

3. Create an account and upload your resume. Apply online or follow the instructions to apply by mail or fax.

4. Wait for a response. If you are selected for the first level of the hiring process, you will be asked to complete an online examination.

5. Wait to be contacted (by telephone, mail or email) for a face-to-face interview. If you are not selected, the USDA will usually notify you.
