Things You'll Need:
- A large wing feather
- needle
- blade
- ink
-
Step 1
To make one, it is best to use a large wing feather from a Turkey or Chicken. Ensure it is completely dry. Clean the feather with tap water and keep it in the sun to dry.
-
Step 2
Cut a groove into the quill about 2cm from its tip. Make sure that the cut you make is regular in shape and not too irregular because the irregularity in shape increases the chances of the ink spilling out.
-
Step 3
Remove the soft tissue from inside the quill with a needle. Do not puncture the walls of the quill. This step creates a space to store the ink.
-
Step 4
Cut the point off the end of the quill so that it has a flat tip. This enhances the writing ability of the quill.
-
Step 5
Then cut down the center of the groove to the point. This will help the ink to run to the tip effectively.
-
Step 6
Now your quill is ready. Dip the quill into ink and try it out. Be careful because it might be messy until you get the hand of it.
-
Step 7
Practice writing on rough sheets before writing on any other paper. You need to use the edges of the pointed quill to write.
-
Step 8
Always keep the ink bottle a bit away from you to make sure you dont spill the ink on your clothes or paper. Do press too hard on the paper with your quill. This may damage the tip and also increase the chances of you spilling ink all over the paper.
-
Step 9
Use smooth hand movements while writing. In no time you will be able to write with and use a quill.
