A notepad is vital to staying motivated
A notepad is vital to staying motivated

It does not matter what your personal goals are in life, we all know that trying to achieve those goals can be difficult and perhaps even a daunting task.
The problem is not usually in the goal itself but rather in the motivation you have to achieve that goal.

If you have ever tried to change something about your life you well understand where I am coming from here. The "experts" all say that it takes 6 weeks to form a habit, but oftentimes we fall short by the time we get into our third or fourth week.
Why do we fail when we were so eager to succeed? Lack of motivation!

Well I an going to show you how you can achieve your personal goals by helping you to stay motivated enough to make it to and past that initial 6 week goal and get you from conscious thought to habit!

Motivation is the key to making any positive change in your life, no matter what your goal is, be it losing weight, stopping smoking, going to the gym, what have you.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • notepad
  • pencil
  • nice stationary
  • picture frames
  1. Step 1

The first step towards staying motivated is to write down what it is that you want to do for your own personal success.

Lets say that you want to lose weight. Don't just write I want to lose weight, write down exactly how many pounds you want to lose and how long you want to take to do this.

Make this an achievable goal, in other words don't simply say I want to lose 40 lbs in 3 months! You know that is not a healthy weight loss.

Instead say I want to lose 1-2 pounds a week so that I can reach a goal of at least 5 pounds a month. Now, this is a doable goal because you do not want to be so hard on yourself that you are setting yourself up to fail. Instead set yourself up to succeed.

  2. Step 2

Write a list of why you want to reach your goal.
Get as detailed as possible. Say you want to stop smoking.
    Your goals could be
    to improve your health.
    Increase your ability to exercise
get that cigarette smoke smell out of your close
Stop tasting Nicotine if you suck on your mouth
get that yellow color out of your teeth
have your home smell fresh and clean instead of like an ashtray
stop poisoning family members with second hand smoke.
I am sure you can think of a lot more ideas here.
The longer you make this list the more motivated it will be.

  3. Step 3

    Make this list obvious
Now you have it on paper, it's time to make it more personal
Sit down at the computer and design a custom background, use whatever you like with clip art and perhaps a border, then type your list into this beautiful page you have made.
Once you like how it has come out you will print several copies of your list.
Place this list into picture frames and place them in prominent areas of your home and workspace.
Now you have a beautiful daily reminder of what your goals are and why you want to achieve them, displayed in places where you will frequently look at it.
Every time you walk by one of these framed lists, stop and read it out loud, this helps you not only remember what your goals are, it will make them seem more tangible as you feel each word roll off your tongue.

Tips & Warnings
  • Decide what you want to change and dedicate yourself to changing it
  • Make these changes for yourself not someone else, this is the only path to real and lasting change and probably the biggest motivator of all!
  • Motivation is uplifting, empowering and addicting!
  • Be careful with the glass on the picture frames the edges are sharp

on 10/10/2009 Excellent article that clearly points out the power behind words. When you write things down you may not get everything done but you will get some of it done. Self motivation is the difference between success and failure.
