How to Spot a Shoplifter

I've spent the last 18 years in retail, as a clerk, management, and loss prevention. In that time I've seen all kinds of shoplifters from amateurs to professionals. There is no profiling here. Shoplifters come in all shapes and sizes, and all ages. I once caught a 72 year old man who knew what he was doing!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good observation skills.
  • Video surveilance system.
  • Partner or extra person.
  1. Step 1

Children typically are the most amatuer of shoplifters and usually shoplift on a dare or peer pressure. Look for backpacks, and purses that look light when coming in, but heavy as they may leave.

  2. Step 2

Another sign with the amateur shoplifter is nervousness. A shoplifter will try and avoid eye contact and any conversation with an employee.

  3. Step 3

Distractions! There are some shoplifters that show up in groups (kids are good at this, so are professionals). One might be the lookout, or may approach employees to misdirect them somewhere else while the shoplifter gets what they are after.

  4. Step 4

Corners: Shoplifters like to hide what they are doing, so often they will pick up an item they want, and go to a different corner of the store, typically one they feel is safe from cameras and employees.

  5. Step 5

Bathrooms are another target. No cameras are allowed and unless an employee is at the restroom or has to let the customer in, it's the best place for these shoplifters to get what they want.

  6. Step 6

Once the crime is done, the nervousness will continue and they may start moving quickly towards the door. Also they will look over there shoulder to make sure they weren't seen.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always open and look in large boxes and backpacks when selling them.
  • Rolled carpets are another way for people to hide items.
  • Professionals will come in pairs.
  • They scout the location to note cameras and employees.
  • They will use emergency exits if bold enough.
