It is very common for a puppy to resist when a leash is put on for the first time. Fortunately, it is very easy to overcome this problem. Here are the steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flat collar
  • Chain leash
  • Treats
  1. Step 1

Get your puppy used to the leash. Most puppies will resist the first time you try to put a leash and collar on them. Certain breeds are extremely resistant, such as Huskies; they can be very difficult to leash train, but the next few steps will show you how to overcome this.

  2. Step 2

Clip a small chain link leash to your puppy's collar and let your pup drag the leash around the house. Don't try to walk your dog at this point. Just let your dog drag the leash around. A chain leash is required because most puppies will chew the leash.

  3. Step 3

As your dog is walking around the house with the leash, every once in a while simply step on the leash for a few seconds. The pressure will help get your pup used to it.

  4. Step 4

After letting your pup drag the leash around for a while and you can see that he is getting used to it, start picking it up every once in a while. Hold the leash and then drop it and let your pup go on his way.

  5. Step 5

Start to pick up the leash and call your pup over to you. Once your pup gets to you offer her a little treat. After a few times call your pup over and have her follow the treat a few feet.

  6. Step 6

By following this routine for a few days your pup will begin to accept the leash and you'll be able to start walking a few minutes at a time. Within a week or so you'll be able to start loose leash walking and obedience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient
  • Train in short 5-minute sessions
  • Never train when you are stressed or tired.
