    Things You'll Need

    • Comfortable rocker or recliner
      • 1

Dim the lights in the room you'll be singing in. Turn off the television, computers and music players.

      • 2

Sit comfortably in a rocking chair or recliner--somewhere you might be able sit for a while. Baby may not like a lot of movement so be prepared to change seats if you need to.

      • 3

Lay baby on your chest on the side closest to your heart. Cradle him in your left arm and with your right hand very gently rub on baby's back in small circles.

      • 4

Sing a repetitive song to baby. You should sing in a soft tone and in a low volume. Your song choice should be somewhat monotone and predictable.

      • 5

Change songs if baby continues to fuss. Select a song with a different rhythm and cadence. Baby may also want to change positions to get comfortable enough to sleep.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Don't give up if baby doesn't like your singing. Try humming. Singing to baby works well when you have just bathed and lotioned baby.
