How to Troubleshoot Rain Bird Systems

Your Rain Bird system's spray heads will need troubleshooting from time to time. After your system has been installed for a while, you likely will run across some problems. These maintenance-type issues are easy to troubleshoot and generally caused by blockages, water pressure problems or the inadvertent dismembering of a sprinkler head by yard maintenance machinery. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the kind of problem you are having with your regular spray heads. This is usually one of three issues: 1) Misting, which is a result of too much water pressure. To solve this issue, reduce the pressure; 2) Inaccurate pattern, which is caused by some kind of blockage, so clean the nozzle; and 3) Leakage around the stem, which is caused by debris between the wiper seal and the stem. To take care of this issue, step on the stem while the sprinkler is in operation and the water will flush between the stem and cap.

Determine the kind of problem you are having with your impact sprinklers. Check for turf obstruction, dirt or debris in the case or nozzle, excessive or inadequate water pressure, or broken arms.

    • 3

Is the sprinkler stuck or not returning? This is likely to be a water pressure issue. Use a pressure gauge at the spray head and make sure the pressure is adequate.

    • 4

Is the sprinkler leaking? This is usually caused by worn washers and seals. Replace them.

    • 5

Is the range inadequate? Is the sprinkler not throwing as far as it has in the past? This is caused by some kind of blockage, either in the nozzle or the inlet screen. Check these areas and clear out any dirt or debris.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use a screwdriver to clean the nozzles. It can scratch it.
