How to Troubleshoot a 2002 Ford Explorer 4X4

The 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4 was a mid-sized SUV offered by Ford Motor Company. The Explorer was introduced in 1990 and became one of the most well-known vehicles in Ford's lineup. It also served as Ford's only mid-sized SUV on the market. The Ford Explorer wasn't without its problems, though. Its most popular issue was a controversy involving a series of fatal rollover crashes that was traced back to faulty Firestone tires installed from the factory. However, other problems do exist with the 2002 model year that you'll need to know about. Fortunately, you can troubleshoot these issues before taking it to a mechanic or to the dealership.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your 2002 Explorer 4x4 for proper headlight covers. Some Explorers were fitted with aftermarket headlamp housings. This happened typically if or when the factory housing unit cracked or became damaged. The aftermarket units produced by CK Motorsport for the 2002 Explorer did not have an amber side marker. As a result, these units do not pass the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

Have your Explorer inspected for an aftermarket windshield replacement. Windshields made by Hangzhou and distributed by Safelite were manufactured incorrectly. The safety glass does not break into small pieces. If you are in a crash, you could be seriously injured from shards of glass.

Check the lift-gate glass strut-hinge for signs of damage or deterioration. The lift-gate strut hinge may be faulty on your Explorer. If the hinge comes undone or fractures, you would be seriously hurt if you are opening or closing the gate. Take your Explorer to a Ford dealership to have this item checked and replaced with a new unit. This item is covered under a factory recall, so it should not cost you anything.
