If you are installing a Wayne Dalton Torsion garage door for the first time, adjusting it is the last task you will do---after installing the vinyl weather stripping. Lift the door and check the balance. If the door lifts by itself or if it is hard to pull down, you will need to unwind the springs. If the door is hard to lift, or if it is too easy to pull down, you will need to wind the springs. You can adjust the spring tension on a Wayne Dalton Torsion garage door with a few simple tools.
Things You'll Need
- Locking pliers
- Winding bar
Fully close the door.
Apply locking pliers to the track above the third roller.
Insert a winding bar into the winding cone and push upwards on the winding bar while loosening the screws on the winding cone.
Carefully adjust spring tension a quarter of a turn. Re-tighten the screws in the cone and repeat for the other side.
Recheck door balance.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not adjust too many turns at one time---recheck. If the door only has one spring, clamp the torsion tube with locking pliers to keep the counterbalance cable on the cable drums. Do this before loosening the screws.
- Once the set screws are loose, be prepared to support the full force of the torsion spring.
