How to Create Background Graphics
Backgrounds graphics can either make or break the website image you want to portray. They should enhance the look and feel of a website. If the text is white, including a dark background can complement your site. On the other hand, if both the text and background are close in color, it will be difficult for people to read. A busy background can draw people to the pattern instead of the information you want them to see.

1
Open Photoshop. Consider the tiling pattern of your background as you select an image size. In the "New" dialog box, choose a size and background color (optional), and click "OK."
-
2
Add a layer to your palette by selecting the "New Layer" button on the bottom of your "Layers" palette. Select a foreground color and fill the layer with a color of your choice. To fill the layer with a texture, select "Edit" then "Fill" from the menu and click "Pattern" from the contents.
-
-
3
Click on the arrow by "Custom Pattern" to use a pattern and select any other options you want to use for your background graphics. Click "OK" when you are finished.
-
4
Add a layer by selecting the "New Layer" button from the "Layers" palette. Choose the "Shapes" tool from the toolbox and select a shape from the "Shapes" tool options bar.
-
5
Double check that the layer is still selected and click on the "Add a layer style" button in the "Layers" palette. Add any special styles you want to include in your graphics.
-
6
Change the opacity of the new shape you just created by selecting the layer in the "Layers" palette and reducing the opacity.
-
7
Repeat Steps 4 through 6 to add additional shapes to your background graphics until you are satisfied with the background image.
-
8
Select the "Text" tool from the toolbox if you want to add text to your background graphics. Open the "Character" palette by selecting it from "Text" tool options bar. Then, choose the font, color and style you want to use.
-
9
Type your text in the background image. To change the style, choose "Warp Text" from the options bar and select a style. Repeat Step 5 to reduce the opacity of the text layer.
-
10
Save your background graphics as a raw Photoshop file (click "File" then "Save") in case you'd like to change it again later. Also, save it as a web file (click "File" then "Save for Web"). You are now ready to use your background graphics on the web.
