How to Find GM Parts Numbers

If you own a GM car, you may need to order parts at some time during the life of your vehicle. To order the correct part, you will need the official part number. GM parts usually have a number on them, but this is not the official part number. It is a casing number. Attempting to order the part you need with the casing number will not work.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your GM vehicle's VIN number. This can usually be found on a plate located on the driver's side dashboard just under the windshield glass.

    • 2

Call your local GM dealership and ask for the number for the parts you need. Often, dealerships can provide the part number over the phone if you provide them with your car's VIN number and the name of the part you are calling about.

    • 3

Visit the dealership in person if the dealership is unable to give you the part number over the phone. Ask for a price list. The price list should contain the part you're seeking, along with its part number.

    • 4

Go to GMpartsdirect.com (see Resources) if the dealership doesn't provide you with the part number you need. In the upper left-hand corner of the screen is a search box. Put the name of the part you're looking for into the search box, and GM Parts Direct will attempt to locate the part number for you.
