How to Obtain a Pin for the FAFSA Form
Completing college applications and other related paperwork can be a chore if you are doing so by hand. In recent years, however, many schools and financial institutions have moved the application process online for efficiency. The Federal Application for Financial Student Aid can be completed online but in order to sign your application, you will need to obtain a pin number from the Department of Education.

Open the FAFSA pin Web site in your Web browser (see Resources). Click on the blue "Apply Now" link on the right-hand side of the page.

Read the pin application overview and click "Next."

Enter your personal information in the required fields. You will need to provide your Social Security number, full given name, date of birth, address and e-mail address. You may choose your own pin number by entering a four-digit number into the last two fields on the page. If you do not enter your own pin number, one will be automatically assigned to you.

Read the terms of service and select the "I agree not to share my PIN" option. Click on the "Submit my PIN Application" link to submit your application.

Check your e-mail for a confirmation of your new pin number. A link will be provided to the official FAFSA pin Web site that will display your pin number.

Tips & Warnings
Parents can apply for a pin number if their signatures are needed on the FAFSA form. The pin number allows parents to electronically sign the application.
