How to Dispute an Equifax Credit Report Online

Having an account incorrectly reported on your credit report can have a negative impact on your ability to open new credit accounts or get a loan. It can even affect your chances to be hired for certain jobs that require a credit check. If you have an account reported incorrectly on your Equifax credit report, you can file a dispute online and ask for it to be removed.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Visit the Equifax web site at Equifax.com.

  2. Step 2

    Click the "Online Dispute" tab in the navigation bar at the top of the page.

  3. Step 3

    Enter your zip code into the text box and click the red "Submit" button. It will open a new window.

  4. Step 4

    Click "Get Started" in the new window.

  5. Step 5

    Enter the required information into the form. Press "Submit" when you are finished.

  6. Step 6

    Answer the verification questions and press "Submit."

  7. Step 7

    Click "Start a New Dispute."

  8. Step 8

    Select the item that you would like to dispute. You can navigate through the different sections of your credit report by clicking on the menu on the left-side of the screen. When you see an item that you would like to dispute, click the blue "Dispute this Item" link next to it. You will be asked to select a reason for the dispute. Enter additional information about your dispute into the text box at this time. Click "Add Dispute" when you are finished.

  9. Step 9

    Click "Dispute Summary" in the navigation menu to see a list of items that you are disputing. Enter your e-mail address to receive online notification of the results of your dispute, and click "Submit Dispute." Your dispute will be initiated and you will receive a resolution within 30 to 45 days.
