How to Troubleshoot a Coleman Air Compressor

Save

Coleman has a number of air compressors that have unique attributes. Some come with integrated tool holders; others don't require you to add or change oil. Coleman also carries some of the best portable air compressors on the market. Whichever model you chose, however, you are still bound to run into some problems. If you don't want to call in the service center, try troubleshooting the problems on your own.

Tips To Troubleshoot a Coleman Air Compressor

  • Close the tank petcock if you are experiencing low pressure or not enough air. Make sure that the requirement of air for the accessory you are using is not higher than the CFM and the pressure supplied by the compressor. If it is, you need a larger compressor. Keep in mind that most accessories are rated at 25 percent of the actual CFM while running continuously. Also, check to make sure there is not a hole in the hose.

  • Check all the fittings with soapy water. This is important, particularly if there is excessive starting and stopping while the unit is not in use. Make sure to tighten or reseal any leaking fittings, but be careful to not over tighten. If any of the parts, especially the seals, are worn, replace them with new ones.

  • Try not using an extension cord if the circuit breaker trips while you are using the air compressor. If this does not solve your problem, replace the check valve and/or the pressure switch bleeder valve. If the problem is because of excessive wire length or restricted air passages, you will need to contact an authorized service center or electrician.

  • Relocate the compressor to an area with cool, dry and well-circulated air if the unit is overheating. Make sure to clean all cooling surfaces of the pump and the motor. You may also have a leaking valve. If so, replace the worn parts and/or seals.

  • Make sure you have adequate power if the motor stalls. You may have low voltage. Also, the pressure switch bleed valve may be defective. If this is the case, replace the part.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your tank is leaking, immediately replace the tank. Do NOT attempt to repair it. Always check manufacturer recommendations before making any adjustments to your Coleman Air Compressor.
