How to Size a Fastpitch Softball Bat

The right sized bat is an essential piece of softball equipment. To find the proper size, you need to know your height and weight in addition to the size of the bat's barrel. With the right information, you can size the bat yourself.

  • Record your height and your weight on a piece of paper and bring that piece of paper to a sporting goods store that sells fast-pitch softball bats.

  • Determine the proper barrel size. Most fast-pitch softball bats have a specific barrel size: 2 3/4 inches. This is 1/4 inch bigger than a standard softball bat, which has a barrel size of 2 1/2 inches. To find the proper size, pick up a softball bat and compare its diameter with that of the other bats. If the bat is fatter than some of the other bats, it is likely a fast-pitch softball bat. If you are having trouble locating the proper size, ask an employee for assistance.

  • Select the proper size according to your size and weight. A chart has been provided in the resources section. Generally, the shorter you are and the less you weigh, the shorter bat you will need to use, and vice versa. Bats generally run from 26 to 34 inches long.

  • Take a few practice swings to ensure that the bat is a comfortable fit. While the height/weight guidelines are helpful, essentially sizing the proper fast-pitch softball bat is a matter of comfort. Even if you technically should swing a longer bat, if the shorter bat feels better, use the shorter bat.
