How to Play Beautiful Girl on the Recorder
"Beautiful Girl," the popular song featured in the classic musical "Singin' in the Rain," can easily be played on the recorder. Despite having a lively melody, the piece doesn't have a range that exceeds B above middle C, making "Beautiful Girl" accessible even to beginning recorder players.

Download or purchase the sheet music for "Beautiful Girl," if you have not done so already. Musicroom.com has it available for £2.25; you may be able to find the score for free online, as well, though it might be difficult to locate. You will almost certainly not be able to find sheet music written specifically for the recorder, but that does not matter, so long as the melody falls within the recorder's range.

Try playing the melody line through, once. If you have a piano score, you can completely ignore all the other staves: unless you're playing as an ensemble, only the melody is important. You might have to go slowly at first, to sight-read the score and play each note. Note that in the 6th bar of the score available from MusicRoom.com, the melody drops to B below middle C---a note that is not playable on most soprano recorders. You can substitute this note with F#, without harming the tune. If you are skilled in playing the upper ranges of the recorder, you can alternately transpose the song a whole octave higher, allowing you to play the melody as written, but this will increase the song's difficulty.

Practice playing "Beautiful Girl" several times every day, until you can play it smoothly and flawlessly. Musicroom.com's score is in the key of D Major, with two sharp notes: C and F. C# is little used, but F# is frequently played throughout, so you'll need to master it to play the song well. With enough practice, you'll be able to play "Beautiful Girl" from memory, without the need of sheet music.
