How to Take an IQ Test Online

IQ tests are a measurement of your ability to mentally compute and visualize. This is reflected in a numerical score. Originally used by educators to place children into special education programs, their accuracy has been a subject of great debate. Whatever your stance on the subject, IQ tests are a great way to challenge yourself. Whether you are looking to kick-start your brain or simply to kill some time, the Internet provides several IQ tests from which to choose.

Instructions

1. Select an online IQ test. You might try the Mensa workout or IQTest.com (see Resources). Note that not all online IQ tests abide by any particular standard and will vary in length and format.

2. Do not use any additional aids, such as pen and paper or a calculator. Mental problem solving is key to any IQ test.

3. Work quickly through the problems. While not all online IQ tests are timed, those that are may factor the time it takes to complete the test into your score.

4. Submit your IQ test. Self-scoring online IQ tests will present your score on the next page. Note that some may charge you to see a "complete report." Use your discretion.

5. Remember that most online IQ tests are for entertainment purposes only. High IQ societies such as Mensa require that you take a test in person. Check with the specific organization for details.

Tips & Warnings

• The traditional IQ test does not measure every type of intelligence or capability. As there are several test formats available on the Internet, online IQ tests should not be relied upon to accurately reflect IQ. Two different tests may give you two completely different scores.
