A Chia pet is a ceramic planter that grows sprouts on the surface of the planter. Chia pets come in a wide variety of different shapes, including animals and people. Apply the moistened seeds to the outer surface of the planter and then keep them properly moist. In a short time, the seeds will sprout into a lovely coat of sprout hair around the outside of the Chia pet planter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • All-purpose scissors
  1. Step 1

Keep the Chia pet filled to the top with water. Check the water every day to make sure the Chia pet is full.

  2. Step 2

Watch for seeds to sprout within approximately 5 days. Place the Chia pet in a sunny spot after the seeds sprout. Allow the sprouts to grow until they are between 1 and 2 inches long.

  3. Step 3

Trim the seed sprouts with scissors. Trim evenly all around the outside of the Chia pet, or, if you have the Chia Head version of the planter, trim the Chia pet's hair into a wacky hairstyle. Make a punk rock hairstyle by cutting it to look like a Mohawk. Leave a long center strip and cut the sprouts on each side shorter than the strip.
Choose a shape and create an outline of this shape in the Chia pet's sprouts. For example, leave the sprouts in a heart-shaped area long and cut the rest of the sprouts shorter. Another option is to cut the Chia pet's sprouts into a crew cut. Trim the ends carefully so you do not remove more than desired.

  4. Step 4

Keep the Chia pet moist, and create new and different hairstyles every few days as the sprouts outgrow the previous style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Growing a Chia pet is an effective way to teach children how to grow plants.
