How to House Train a Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are smart dogs that care greatly about pleasing their masters. For this reason, they are a relatively easy breed to house train if properly tended to. While no dog will pick up house-training overnight, the right steps will allow you to expedite the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a small area for your chihuahua to sleep in at night, as dogs are reluctant to go to the bathroom where they sleep.

    • 2

Fence off, or otherwise limit the size of the area you want your dog to use as a toilet. When it is time for your dog to go out, bring her to the small area and stay with her until she eliminates. This process can be time-consuming at first, but your dog will soon learn a schedule for going out.

    • 3

Praise your dog immediately after he eliminates to positively reinforce the habit.

    • 4

Stick to a firm routine, letting your chihuahua out at regular times each day. Chihuahua's are eager to please, and heavily reliant on consistency, so keep your dog to a schedule.

    • 5

Associate a word with going to the bathroom, such as "out" or "potty." Use the word every time you are ready to take your dog out until she understands that the word means it is time to go outside.

    • 6

Only chastise your chihuahua or use any non-violent punishment, such as putting her in her crate, if you catch her in the act of going to the bathroom indoors. Doing so after the fact will only confuse your dog.
