How to E-Mail a Resume With a Cover Letter Included

One of the biggest mistakes that online job seekers make is to neglect to send a short cover letter in addition to their resume. The only reason why you should leave out a cover letter when you send your resume is if the potential employer specifically asks you to. There is a way to send your email resume and cover letter so the contact can open and read it easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your resume and cover letter in your word processing program. You can either format these documents as two separate files or combine them into one file.

    • 2

Convert both files to PDF format. The PDF format will preserve your formatting and make it easy for the recruiter to view your resume exactly as you intended it to look. Use Adobe Acrobat, or CreatePDF.adobe.com to do the conversion from your word processing document.

    • 3

Load your email and click "Compose" to start a new message.

    • 4

Attach the PDF files (or the one PDF file you created if you decided to combine the two documents) to your email. If you decided to send the file as two separate documents, attach the cover letter first and then the resume.

    • 5

Double check the PDF files once more before you send to ensure that the formatting and any included images are showing correctly.

    • 6

Type in a short message to the recruiter describing why you are sending your resume and cover letter. Include details about who referred you to send the information or the place where you learned about the available position. Write the position that you are applying for as the subject or "Referred by..." then the name of the person who referred you to the contact. This will help having your message deleted or sent to a spam folder.

    • 7

Type in the recruiter's email address and send your resume. Check your "Sent" folder to ensure that it was delivered correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some employers also appreciate sending your cover letter as text within the actual email instead of as an attachment. Send your resume and cover letter with a return receipt if your email system allows.
