How to Build Garage Shelves With Doors

Garages are a multi-purpose space in most houses. Whether hobbies and crafting tools are stored there, a garage shelf with doors can store it all. This enables the homeowner to organize and locate all accessories. Shelving can always be found in a garage but shelves with doors are a bit different.

• Two pieces 24-by-84-by-¾-inch plywood
• Framing square
• Shelf track
• Four pieces 24-by-34½-inch plywood
• Four pieces 4-by-36-¾-inch plywood
• Variable speed drill
• Philips head screw tip
• 1¼-inch drywall screws
• One piece 36-by-84-by-¼-inch plywood
• Glue
• Measuring tape
• Frames and Doors
• Two pieces 2-by-84-by-¾-inch plywood
• Three pieces 2-by-32-by- ¾-inch plywood
• One piece 4¾-by-32-by-¾-inch plywood
• Corrugated fasteners
• 4d finish nails
• Two pieces 16½-by-80-by-¾-inch plywood
• Three pair of hinges

Box Assembly

1. Place the two 24-by-84-inch plywood (ends) on a worktable. Measure from one end and make marks at 4, 36 and 54 inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of the ends. Place an "X" just below the lines to signify where the shelves will be secured.

2. Measure in from the back and front edges between the 54-inch mark and the top of the garage shelf ends and make several marks at 1½ inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines parallel to the front and the back of the garage shelf ends. Stop the lines short of the shelf at 54 inches and the top.

3. Measure the length of parallel lines from the previous step and cut four pieces of adjustable shelf track to that length. Secure them to the garage shelf ends with the tack provided.

4. Place the 24-by-34½-inch plywood on the worktable along with the 4-by-34½-inch plywood. Apply glue to one long edge of the 4-inch material and secure it to the back of the 24-by-34½-inch material with the 1¼-inch drywall screws. Repeat this for each shelf.

5. Apply glue to the ends of the shelves and the 4-inch support. Secure the shelves to the garage shelf ends with the drywall screws. Next, apply glue to the edges of the garage shelf ends and shelves and secure the ¼-inch plywood to it with the box nails. Measure the distance between the adjustable shelf tracks to be certain the shelves in the list will work. Add the 1-by-2-inch lumber to the front of the shelves and place them on the clips for the adjustable track.

Frames and Doors

6. Place the two 2-by-84-inch pieces of plywood on the worktable. Measure from one end and make marks at 4¾, 36 and 54 inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across both 84-inch pieces.

7. Place the four pieces that are 32 inches long between them. The 4¾-inch piece goes on the bottom and one of the 2-inch pieces goes at the top. The remaining pieces go below the lines. Secure them with the corrugated fasteners.

8. Apply glue to the front edges of the garage shelf cabinet. Place the face frame on it and secure it to the shelf unit with the finish nails.

9. Install the hinges on the overlay doors according to manufacturer's instructions. Install the doors on the garage shelf unit.

Tips & Warnings

• Clean excess glue immediately with a damp cloth. Secure the garage shelf unit to the wall of the garage if necessary.
• Do not leave power tools unattended if children are present. Do not stain or paint the garage shelf unit without proper ventilation.
