Things You'll Need:
- Strong nail file or emery board
- Large bowl, big enough to soak feet
- Small bowl
- 1 bath towel
- 1 hand towel
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp Epsom salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
- ½ & 1 tsp cup olive oil (separate)
- Nail polish (color of your choice)
- Clear base coat polish
- Nail polish remover
- Cotton balls
- Large nail clippers
- Orange stick for cuticles
- Vitamin E oil (can use capsules and break open)
- Foot moisturizer
-
Step 1
Begin your pedicure by adding warm water to a large bowl to create a foot bath. Be sure to place the foot bath on the bath towel to keep the floor from getting wet. Mix in 1 tbsp of Epsom salt and 3 tbsp lemon juice to the foot bath. Stir gently with fingers. Soak feet in the homemade foot bath for about 20 minutes. Rub feet gently a few times while they are soaking in the foot bath. Epsom salt is great for exfoliating feet and making them soft and smooth. Remove feet after the allotted time and gently dry them with the clean bath towel.
-
Step 2
Empty the foot bath full of Epsom salt and lemon juice and rinse thoroughly. Fill the large bowl with warm water and set aside. Mix ½ cup olive oil and 2 tbsp sugar in a separate small bowl and stir gently with fingers. Apply the sugary solution to the bottoms of feet and rub in gently for a few minutes to get rid of any excess dry skin and rough patches. Then, spread a little of the olive oil and sugar mix to the tops of toe nails and down by the cuticles and rub in gently to exfoliate these areas. Rubbing the sugar mix on cuticles, especially, will help to loosen any excess skin and make them easier to be pushed back. Rinse feet, thoroughly, in the large bowl you filled with warm water. Pat feet dry with the hand towel.
-
Step 3
Clip toe nails to get your feet ready for polish. The best way to cut toe nails is to clip them straight across to prevent ingrown toe nails, especially on the big toes. Do not cut too much of the toe nail off. Leave at least a little white on each toe nail. Using the emery board or strong nail file, file toe nails straight across and gently upward on the sides. Do this until you have a neat and groomed nail on each toe. Next, take 1 tsp of the olive oil and rub into the cuticles of your toe nails. Take the orange stick and gently push back the cuticles of your toes. The olive oil will make pushing back the cuticle just a little easier and will also moisturize this area to prevent dryness. Rub off any excess olive oil with the hand towel.
-
Step 4
Using the foot moisturizer, rub lotion on the bottoms of feet and bottoms of toes up to the toe nails. A great foot moisturizer to use is something with peppermint that will cool and relax your feet and sooth muscles. Do not get moisturizer on the toe nails because it will be harder to get your toe nail polish to stay. Next, apply a clear base coat of polish to each toe and let dry. Finish your pedicure by applying two coats of any color polish you wish to use. Let the polish dry completely before putting on any socks or shoes (usually about 20-30 minutes). Use toe separators if this helps to keep your toes apart and polish to dry quicker. If you chose, you may even wait to put the foot moisturizer on until after nails have been polished and the polish is dry. This way you can spread the foot moisturizer all over feet and nails.
