H-O-R-S-E is a great basketball game that can be played by any age or skill level. You can play with one other person or up to a group of 4 to 5 people. Here I will present how the game of H-O-R-S-E is played. The focus will be on playing against just one other player.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basketball
  • Basketball hoop
  • At least one other player (up to 4 players)
  1. Step 1

Choose who will go first. You can do this randomly or you can shoot free throws to see who wins the right to go first.

  2. Step 2

The first player chooses any shot that they want to take. It can be as easy as a layup or as difficult as a 360-spin from the free-throw line while wearing a blindfold.

  3. Step 3

If the first player makes the shot, the second player must replicate that shot. If the second player makes the shot, no score is made. If the second player misses the shot, the second player is given an "H."

  4. Step 4

If the first player misses the shot, it is the second player's turn to create his/her own shot for the first player to attempt.

  5. Step 5

The game continues with players receiving a letter every time they miss a shot that their opponent made. The letters are received in the order of H-O-R-S-E.

  6. Step 6

When a player gets H-O-R-S-E, the other player is awarded the victory.

Tips & Warnings
  • An optional way of playing is to allow a player that reaches H-O-R-S-E to attempt the shot that he/she just missed. If they make that shot, they get to stay in for one more letter. This is called a HORSE shot and can only be taken once.
