When watching the Olympics swimmers ever see them do a flip on the wall? This is called a flip turn. It is meant to keep you moving and get you as fast as possible away from the wall so you can have a faster racing time. Well, it is not only for Olympians. While swimming laps for exercise you can also do flip turns and here's how:

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Flips turn are only done while doing front crawl and back crawl. For butterfly and breast stroke you would do a 2 hand touch. Also, you would not do a flip turn if you are swimming front crawl into breast stoke. It will and should only be done with front crawl and/or back crawl.

  2. Step 2

For a front crawl flip turn; while approaching the wall be ready to flip about an arms length away from the wall. With one hand extended use that arm to help pull your body into a tight ball and flip. Your 2 feet should be planted firmly on the wall, while the rest of your body is still wound tightly is a squat like position on your back. Give yourself a good push off the wall, with the arms extended. You will be on your back, so before approaching the surface flip over onto your front. Begin kicking and resume front crawl.

  3. Step 3

For a back crawl flip turn; while approaching the wall be ready to flip about an arms length away from the wall. Most pools have flags hanging over both sides near the wall. Practice a few times, when you see the flags count how many stroke you need to take before flipping over on your front. When you feel you are about an arms length away from the wall flip over onto your front. With one hand extended use that arm to help pull your body into a tight ball and flip. Your 2 feet should be planted firmly on the wall, while the rest of your body is still wound tightly is a squat like position on your back. Give yourself a good push off the wall, with the arms extended. You will be on your back. Begin kicking (flutter kick or dolphin kick)and resume back crawl when you reach the surface.
