How to Work as a Male Model

So you're really, really good-looking and you know it. But do you have what it takes to become a male model?

1. Fit the profile. To be a male fashion model you'll need to be close to a standard size. That means between 5'11 and 6'1 with a slim to medium build. If you fall too far outside these measurements, you'll need something really special to make it as a male model.

2. Have the look. Male models need to have clear skin and a healthy look. Tattoos are a big no-no, because they'll need to be covered for most photo shoots and runway shows. If you have just one or two tattoos, consider removing them with laser tattoo removal. If you have lots of tattoos, you can still be a model - just for alternative publications and ad campaigns, and not mainstream fashion magazines.

3. Get noticed. Don't wait to be discovered - walk into your model agency and ask if they think you've got what it takes. Do your research, and choose an agency that you know does reputable work. Always wear something simple when visiting your modeling agency or going on auditions - ideally, blue jeans and a plain black or white t-shirt.

4. Work with the right people. A model's agent should be their best friend. Don't go with a modeling agency that wants you to pay for headshots or comp cards - reputable agencies don't do this. You should feel that your model agency is on your side. If you aren't being sent to many model castings, ask your agent why.

5. Be a professional. Whether you're at a model casting, a photo shoot, or a fashion show, you need to be in business mode. It's ok to have fun, share a joke or even flirt a little, but your job is to model and get the work done. Don't develop a reputation for being sleazy or a goof-off.

6. Protect your investment. You're a male model now. Don't do ANYTHING to damage that beautiful face!
