Step 1
Consider the state of the economy and your industry. This is hard to do because there are so many conflicting reports in the media. The economy is thawing, but it’s hard to determine if you can get a new gig. It will not likely hurt you to start looking, depending on your industry.
For example, if you’re in the medical field you may find it easier to get a job than someone who was lucky enough to hang on to their employment in the media industry. -
Step 2
Use privacy settings. When job hunting online, it’s important to stay safe. If your employer sees you are looking for a new job, that could put your current gig on the chopping block. Many people nowadays are using privacy settings when they post resumes and profiles online. If you think having your name and contact information out there could hamper your search, be discreet.

Step 3
Mention your current job. Many recruiters and employers may be more likely to hire you knowing that you already have a job. Think of it this way: People actively looked for and secured jobs while they were still employed during the recession. That’s no reason to put your career on hold.
