First of all, what is a kidney stone? Kidney stones are salts and minerals in the urine that stick together to form small pebbles. These stones can form in the kidneys and in the tubes that lead from the kidneys to the bladder, commonly called ureters. The most common types of kidney stones are oxalate and calcium. The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough water, although a family history of kidney stones may also be the culprit.

Preventing kidney stones starts with a few lifestyle changes.

    • 2
      Water

Frequent urination is important, so drink more water. How much you ask? Two to three liters per day. Drink enough water every day to keep your urine output clear or light yellow in color. Water helps to flush away the substances in the kidneys that form kidney stones.

Restricting foods rich in calcium oxalate, such as almonds, beets, okra, rhubarb, spinach, and sweet potatoes, are key if you tend to form calcium oxalate stones. Also, a diet low in animal protein and salt is recommended. Diets high in protein, particularly meat protein, are not recommended.

      Whole Grains

Introduce more fiber into your diet. It has been found that a variety of high fiber plant foods, that contain a naturally occurring compound called phytate, appears to help prevent the crystallization of calcium salts. Phytate can be found in legumes, whole grains, and nuts.

Lastly, but more importantly, see your doctor. If you are experiencing pain, you may be in the throes of passing a kidney stone. It can cause severe pain, bleeding, and even block the flow of urine.
