Use scrap fabric and beads to make applique flowers on your quilted wall hanging.

A constant dilemma for quilters and fabric crafters is what to do with the scraps of fabric leftover after a craft project. It always seems a waste to throw away perfectly good fabric, and many crafters find themselves hoarding drawers full of scraps, vowing to use them someday. Instructions

    • 1

Create cardstock patterns by drawing and cutting out various flower and leaf shapes.

    • 2

Sort fabric scraps and iron them onto fusible interfacing. Then, using the cardstock patterns and fabric marking pencil, trace and cut out the flower and leaf applique shapes.

    • 3

Measure, cut and iron an 18 x 36-inch block of facing fabric. Lay out the fabric and arrange the flower and leaf shapes in a vertical pattern, using green satin cord for stems. Once satisfied with the layout, pin the shapes into place.

    • 4

Mount the fabric onto a quilting hoop and stitch down the stems and shapes using embroidery thread.

Use buttons or beads for the center of the flowers.

    • 5

Measure and cut the batting and backing fabric to the same dimensions as the facing fabric and pin the three pieces together. Quilt the fabric on a sewing machine, stitching randomly around the flowers.

    • 6

Sew a ½-inch border on both sides and the bottom, and then fold the top of the quilt backward and sew a seam to form a loop. Rag the edges by placing cuts in the fabric at ¼-inch intervals, being careful not to accidentally snip through the seam. Run the quilt through the washing machine and dryer, and brush out the ragged edges.

    • 7

Hang the quilt by running a wooden dowel through the top loop and tying the ends with green satin cord.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a bit of fusible stitching web to better hold the flowers in place prior to sewing.

  • Always use two sets of scissors, with one set for paper and the other for fabric. Once fabric scissors cut paper, they will never cut fabric properly again.
