How to Wire a Boat for Surround Sound

Installing surround sound on a boat is exactly like installing surround sound in your home, with one minor difference. In your home, you can hide the wires behind sofas, chairs and along the baseboard on the wall. On your boat, the wires have to be covered to keep errant feet from pulling them loose from the speakers and tripping passengers. Fortunately, plastic wire runs--available at most boat suppliers--can cover the wires on their journey, keeping the wires and your passengers, intact.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Speaker wire
  • Stereo system
  • Plastic wire runs
  • Speakers
  • Diagonal wire cutters
  • Assistant
  • Wire ties
  1. Step 1

Attach the speaker wires to the stereo system before beginning to run the wires. This will ensure that the wires are cut to the proper lengths.

  2. Step 2

Place the speakers where you want them. The speaker wire will run to the speakers along the sides of the boat, at deck level and will be covered with the plastic wire runs, to contain the speaker wires and to prevent passengers from tripping over or pulling on the wires.

  3. Step 3

Wire the speakers on the port (left) side of the boat first. Drill a hole in the console so that the speaker wires can be run through the console down to the deck. Drill another hole in the bottom of the left side console and another on the right side of the console, at the deck level. Run the left side speaker wires through the console to the deck, then directly to the port side of the boat.

  4. Step 4

Have your assistant hold the wires at that point. While your assistant continues to hold the wires, run the speaker wire back to the first speaker, clip the wire to length with the wire cutters and strip the wire and make the connection. Proceed to the second speaker and make the connection, then on to the third.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the process for the starboard (right) side of the boat. Return to the console. Use the wire ties to bundle the wires neatly, then cover the wires with the plastic wire runs, screwing the wire runs to the deck from the console to the port side, then along the starboard side all the way to the last speaker. Repeat the process on the starboard side.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you tell your assistant to hold the wires, tell him not to move.
  • This project requires the use of hand tools; use appropriate caution in this process.
