How Do I Cancel Sprint?

The actual process of canceling your Sprint Wireless contract is simple to complete--you can simply call customer service and provide it with the required information for cancellation, or you can use the "number porting" method and avoid much of the necessary Sprint interaction altogether.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Phone-in Method

  1. Step 1

Determine how much time you have left on your contract (the contract end date). Waiting until the next day to cancel as Sprint doesn't consider your contract completed until the end of that day.

  2. Step 2

Call Sprint customer service with your account number and phone number readily available. If you have a "password" on your account, you will also need to furnish that password to the customer-service representative. A link to the Sprint customer service contacts listed in Resources below. You can also dial "*2" then press "send" from your Sprint mobile phone.

  3. Step 3

Tell the customer-service representative that you wish to cancel your phone line. If you are only canceling one line among many lines, you will want to make sure the representative clearly understands which phone number you are canceling.

  4. Step 4

Wait for confirmation of the cancellation. Your line will typically cancel by the end of that business day. In some extreme circumstances, it could take up to 72 hours for your number to fully disconnected.

  5. "Number-Porting" Method

  6. Step 1

Visit the new cellular carrier you would like to carry your number over to. For example, you could be changing to AT&T Wireless and would therefore want to visit one of its stores. Call that company's customer-service line or visit its online location.

  7. Step 2

Select the plan you would like to activate with your new carrier and the phone you would like to use. The customer service representative will then run any necessary credit checks if you are signing a new contract.

  8. Step 3

Provide the customer-service representative at the new company with your Sprint account number, phone number and any password you may have on your account.

  9. Step 4

Wait for your number to port from your Sprint Wireless account to your new carrier's account. The porting process may take up to 72 hours, although it is typically completed in less than an hour. In the meantime, you will still be able to receive calls on your Sprint phone until the port process is completed.

  10. Step 5

Contact Sprint customer service to ensure your account has been closed after the porting process is completed. If you have multiple lines, you will want to ensure that only the line you ported was canceled.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are porting your number, do not cancel your Sprint account first or you will lose your number. Simply visit your new carrier and have it port your number, then call Sprint to verify your account is closed.
  • Typically if you are sure you are out of contract or you don't mind paying the early termination fees, the porting process is suggested if you are moving to a new carrier. Using this process, you can avoid customer-service representative who are trained to ask a million questions about why you are leaving the company's service.
