There is nothing quite like the fresh taste of vegetables grown in your outdoor garden. If you are missing your favorite summer vegetables, try an indoor home garden. Growing your own vegetables in containers is much easier to maintain than an outdoor garden. Unlike an outdoor garden, you can control light and temperature levels. It's also easier to keep pests and curious animals at bay.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Containers
  • Indoor potting soil
  1. Step 1

Consider the types of vegetables you want to grow. Peppers, radishes, vine cherry tomatoes, and lettuce are good in-home choices. Avoid large vegetables such as cucumbers and pumpkins because they need a lot of space to grow.

  2. Step 2

Choose a room that has southern exposure to sunlight.

  3. Step 3

Use a container that is large enough to hold a full-grown plant. Check to see that the container has holes on the bottom so the water can drain properly.

  4. Step 4

Use an indoor potting soil that consists of 1 part peat, 1 part vermiculite and 1 part perlite.

  5. Step 5

Place plants under florescent lamps so they receive enough heat when the days turn cold. Your garden needs about 7 to 8 hours of lighting each day.

  6. Step 6

Use grow lights to provide supplemental lighting when the weather does not cooperate. These high-output light bulbs are an excellent choice when there isn't enough sunlight in the room, since they imitate the warmth of the sun. During the winter season, there is not enough light during the short days.

  7. Step 7

Maintain your garden. Water your garden daily or every other day. Avoid overwatering because the roots will rot. Use a water soluble fertilizer every two weeks, following manufacturer's directions on the package.
