Determine whether or not the canned food can be rinsed. Any item that contains meat should not be rinsed. The same applies to soup, gravies, liquids, foods packed in syrup, canned pastas and other prepared canned foods such as chop suey, stew or chili. If you desire lower sodium in canned tuna, purchase a low-sodium variety, as much of the salt in canned tuna can't be removed.

If you are rinsing foods for the health benefits, be aware that some sodium will remain in the foods despite rinsing.
