How to Plant Lilies in Pots

Lilies in bloom.

Plant lily bulbs in the fall or spring. Lilies sprout in late May and last until around September. Lilies give off a sweet aroma and make good border plants for a garden. If a bulb is planted deep enough, it survives the winter frost. To be on the safe side, plant the bulbs in a pot. When the ground warms up, the bulbs can be transferred into the ground, though lilies can survive in the pot. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Make a 50/50 mixture of dirt and peat. Peat adds nutrients to the soil. Check to make sure the soil has a little or no clay. Clay soaks up the water the plant needs to grow.

    • 2

Fill a pot three-fourths full with the mixture. Use a hand shovel to dig a hole that goes 6 inches down.

    • 3

Set the bulb upright inside the hole. Cover it up with dirt.

    • 4

      Water the bulb.

    • 5

Set the pot in an area that gets lots of sunlight, like a window or deck. Water regularly. Set a drainage plate under the pot to catch excess water. If there is water in the plate, don't water the plant.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you move the lilies to the ground, plant about 8 inches apart.

  • Do not over-water, which can cause wilting.
