Check Insurers
-
1
First, check your health insurance provider's in-network physician directories. If you do not find a doctor you wish to see, use the free directories offered by other insurance providers that allow nonmembers access to their listings. For example, the North Carolina State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees search allows access to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina physician directory; you can search by hospital affiliation, county and/or a physician's specialty, gender or spoken languages.
-
2
Refer to directories that not only provide contact information through a general facility, medical category or doctor name search, but also rate doctors based on patient experience and/or list accreditations, such as DrScore.com. You can search by your specific North Carolina location. Many sites offer searches by medical condition or physician specialty.

3
Seek help from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services or use the NCcareLINK, nccarelink.gov/topic_search.aspx?st=families.17, to find a doctor if you do not have health insurance. NCDHHS provides health coverage information and options, physician and clinic referrals, and a listing of free services (for example, free flu shots for children or health fairs) offered in your area.
-
4
Search by region on a health organization website specific to a particular health issue. For example, search the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology's Physician Referral Directory for an allergy, asthma or immunology specialist in North Carolina.
-
5
Contact hospitals, university-based health care systems or specialty clinics (for example, the Carolina's HealthCare System at carolinas.org or Duke University at dukehealth.org) for help finding doctors associated with that facility. Facilities can provide you with physician referrals by department or recommendation as well as a wealth of information such as ongoing medical research studies and treatment programs.

Tips & Warnings
If you have bills from an out-patient or in-patient ER visit or hospital-based medical testing/specialist appointment and do not have insurance and cannot pay your bill in full or in-part, reach out to the hospital's finance or billing department to see if you qualify for an income-based bill waiver, financial aid or financing.
