How to Germinate Cherry Pits

Cherry trees have a reputation for being difficult to grow, as their pits can be temperamental. The most important thing to remember is that cherry trees need to be planted in early autumn. Unlike other seeds, cherry pits require a season or two of winter to germinate. The changing seasons tell the cherry pits that it is time to "wake up" and grow. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an area to plant your cherry trees. It should be at least partially shielded from weather and in part sun to sun.

    • 2

Dig a hole about 2 inches wide and 3 inches deep. Line the hole with peat moss fertilizer and mix some fertilizer with the soil from the hole.

    • 3

Drop two or three cherry seeds into the hole and cover with soil. Do not pack the soil down.

    • 4

Drive a stake into the ground next to each hole so you remember where the seeds are planted. Let the cherry pits rest for the winter, and begin looking for saplings in late spring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix peat fertilizer into the soil around the cherry pits when you plant them. This will soften the soil around the seeds and allow young roots to grow more easily. You can try to plant cherry pits from cherries purchased at a grocery store, or commercial seeds that come in packets.
