How to Remove the Ignition in a Toyota Truck

The ignition, also called a power distributor.

The ignition in a Toyota truck is more commonly known as the power distributor. The distributor on a Toyota sits on the passenger side of the vehicle and is bolted to the engine block. There are four spark plug wires running from the distributor to the top of the engine block and two to four bolts (depending on the specific truck) holding the distributor to the engine block. If you are having idle or firing problems, you'll have to remove the ignition to replace it.

Things You'll Need

• Socket wrench
• Socket set
• Masking tape
• Permanent marker

Instructions

1. Open the hood and locate the distributor on the left side of the engine block.

2. Loosen the retaining nut on the cable clamp connected to the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench and slide the clamp off the terminal.

3. Mark the location and orientation of the spark plugs connected to the distributor with masking tape and marker.

4. Remove the spark plugs by pulling them straight off.

5. Remove the electrical connection running to the power distributor. Squeeze the release tab on top of the electrical connection and pull the plug off the distributor.

6. Remove the distributor to engine block bolts and pull the distributor off the engine block.
