Step 1
Wash one cup of wheat berries in a strainer to remove debris. Inspect wheat berries to ensure that the berries do not have outer hulls attached.
-
Step 2
Soak wheat berries overnight in a pan of cold water. The water should cover the wheat berries. Wheat berries have to be soaked in water overnight before they are cooked.
-
Step 3
Drain water from the wheat berries. Rinse the berries with a strainer and add them to a shallow pan.
-
Step 4
Bring wheat berries to a boil in 4 cups of water mixed with 1 teaspoon of salt. Cover the pan and simmer for an hour.
-
Step 5
Remove wheat berries when they are tender. Add wheat berries to your favorite dishes.
-
Step 1
Use wheat berries in soups and stews. Wheat berries add texture and flavor to soups. Instead of preparing the wheat berries beforehand, the berries can be cooked in your choice of a soup or stew.
-
Step 2
Prepare a salad while the wheat berries are cooking. Wheat berries add fiber to salads and in turn will make you feel fuller after consumption. Combine wheat berries with a vinegar-based dressing.
-
Step 3
Eat wheat berries as a cereal in the morning. Add a sweet flavor to the wheat berries by mixing in honey or Splenda. Mix wheat berries into your favorite cereal to become accustomed to the taste of wheat berries.
-
Step 4
Grind wheat berries into a flour to use in baking dishes such as breads, rolls and pizza crusts. Purchase a wheat grinder to aid in crushing the berries into a flour compound.
-
Step 5
Replace meal side items with wheat berries. Mix side items such as rice and beans with wheat berries, or the wheat berries can substitute the side dish. Wheat berries have chewy texture, but their nutty taste creates an alternative side dish.
