Wedding favors are one of the bride's many ways to add personality to her wedding. They come in all shapes and sizes and range from typical to original. Oftentimes, wedding favors serve as table decorations as well as being useful as guest favors. When considering wedding favors, keep in mind that the purpose of a wedding favor is primarily to show appreciation to your guests for being there on your special day. Ensure they are tasteful and sentimentally significant. Depending on your style and motivation, you can make a wedding favor as cheap and as original as you want.

Determine the container to be used for your wedding favor. The typical wedding favor is a holder of some sort of gift to your guest. The container, however, should effectively make a statement to your guest of the theme of your wedding. For example, some popular containers are tins in the shape of hearts, wedding bells, general circles, etc. Other popular containers are small boxes and mesh bags. Most major retail and hobby stores, such as Walmart or Hobby Lobby, will have a wide selection of favor containers to from which to choose.

Choose your wedding favor filling. The most popular wedding favor filling is candy ranging from Sweet Tarts to mini-chocolate candies such as M&M's. Other wedding favor fillings include soaps, mints, rice, candles and many more. Personalization is one of the most popular trends in wedding favors today, and quite possibly one of the most expensive. Websites such as theknot.com and mymms.com offer wedding favor personalization, providing ways to personalize individual candies with your choice of words such as the bride and groom's name or the wedding date.

  3. Step 3

Choose your favor colors and decorations. By the time you choose your container and filling, you probably have a pretty good idea of what your wedding colors will be. Consider the transparency of your favor container when deciding what colors to use for the various aspects of your favors. If your container is see-through or if the top is see-through such as glass or plastic, a good idea is to place most of the color in your filling and leave your container a neutral color such as silver or white. If your container is solid and has to be opened to see its contents, your wedding colors should be actively portrayed by either the actual color of the container or the decorations on the container. A popular trend in favor decorations is to use ribbon in your wedding colors to tie around the container. Trinkets such as small wedding rings or wedding bells are also very popular as attachments to those ribbons.

Tips & Warnings
  • When decorating your favors, never use tape or white glue. Not only are these messy and often unstable, but they can also interfere with the overall look of your favor. Make sure not to overload your favor with decorations. Determine how you want to your guest to perceive your favor without adding more clutter and work for yourself. Shop around to make sure you receive the best price for each component of your favor. Along with major retail stores such as Walmart and Target, smaller thrift shops and antique shops often carry items that may offer the originality you are looking for.
