How to Handle a Dwarf Hamster

How to Handle a Dwarf Hamster thumbnail
Hamsters, which are nocturnal, may exercise at night.

Dwarf hamsters are entertaining pets, but if they are not handled regularly, they may exhibit aggressive behavior. Begin handling a new pet gradually, so it has time to become accustomed to you and its surroundings. Then make it a habit to give it supervised playtime outside of the cage.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands to remove any smells that might distract the hamster.

    • 2

Place your hand in the cage and let the hamster get used to your scent for a few minutes.

    • 3

If your hamster is new to you, hold a jar or tube in the cage. It may climb right in. If it doesn't, give the hamster a nudge to get it inside.

    • 4

Remove the dwarf hamster from the tube or jar and place it in your hand.

    • 5

Gently pet and feed the hamster treats so that it becomes used to you.

    • 6

Repeat these steps every day for several weeks. At that point, you may be able to pick it up directly out of the cage. Pick it up by the back of the neck or hold your hand out flat for it to crawl on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never wake a dwarf hamster from sleep, because it will very likely bite you. Because hamsters are nocturnal, the best time to play with them is in the evening.
