How to Learn Basketball Positions

Just like football, soccer and baseball, basketball is a team sport. Because of this, each player is assigned a position on the court. There are five positions, point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. These positions are usually played according to size and ability. Although learning these positions will take a while, you will be able to know where you fit into the team in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which basketball position is best for you. If you are smaller and tend to shoot more outside shots, then a shooting guard or point guard position would be best for you. If you are bigger and like to play inside, then you will want to play as a small forward, power forward or center.

    • 2

Join a recreational or school team. Playing on a team is the best way to learn positions because the coach will put you in a position that is best for your ability and skill level.

    • 3

Play at a park or playground and join in on games. This is the second-best method to learn a position if you are unable to join an official team. Ask your teammates for advice on how to play a specific position. Do not be afraid to ask for help.

    • 4

Attend a basketball camp. These are readily available for younger children and all the way to college age. Basketball camps hone skills and you will learn how to post up and make plays. Some camps, such as big man camps, only instruct forwards and centers.

    • 5

Watch footage of professional athletes play their position. If you want to be the best you have to learn from the best. Watch games and study how these players position themselves and fit in with their team. Besides games, there are plenty of videos that are dedicated to basketball tips and fundamentals.
