How to Convert a Chemical Pool to a Salt Water Pool

Converting your chemical pool to salt water can have many health benefits for you, your family and your backyard environment. Harsh chlorine and other pool chemicals can cause damage to your skin, hair and eyes, and can kill or cause damage to local plants and animals. A salt water conversion can be accomplished easily, and can even save you money over the long run when compared to maintaining a chemical pool.


The cost upfront to purchase the salt water system for your pool can be up to $7,000 or more, depending on your pool size. However, once you have completed the conversion, adding additional salt to your pool each season will cost less than $50. On average, you can spend up to $40 a month just to maintain a chemical pool.

Things You'll Need

  • Salt water filtration system
  • Pool drainage pump
  • 200+ lbs. of salt (per 10,000 gallons of water in pool)
  • pH level indicator
  • Purchase a salt water filtration system large enough to handle your pool size, as well as enough salt needed for your pool size (200 lbs. of salt per 10,000 gallons).

  • Turn off your pool's power supply and drain your pool of all of its water.

  • Remove the chemical unit from its base, and separate it from the entire plumbing system of the pool. Set it aside.

  • Place the salt water filtration system in place, and hook it up directly to the existing plumbing. Check the instructions for your unit to see if any additional plumbing source is needed.

  • Fill your pool with water again, and add the exact amount of salt to the filtration system. Turn the filter on, and let the pool run for several hours.

  • Check the pH level in the pool periodically until it reaches a balanced level, adding any additional salt if needed.
