Balloon wine enables novices to prepare homemade wine without purchasing expensive specialty supplies. Making wine out of grape juice requires fermenting the juice with yeast and sugar. A balloon traps the gases produced during the fermentation process. The results of this wine-making technique lack the subtle flavors found in traditionally made wines, but the alcoholic content is usually higher. (See Reference 1)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pkg (1/2 tsp.) active dry yeast
  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 24 oz. (Two 12 oz. cans) frozen Welch's grape juice concentrate mixed with 72 oz. water or 96 oz. (3 qt.) ready-to-drink Welch's grape juice
  • 1 1/2 gal. bowl
  • Long-handled spoon
  • Funnel
  • 1 gal. jug, sterilized
  • 1 balloon
  • 1 rubber band
  1. Step 1

Mix together the grape juice concentrate and water (or the ready-to-drink grape juice) with the sugar and yeast in the 1 1/2 gallon bowl. Stir thoroughly to combine using a long handled spoon.

  2. Step 2

Place the funnel in the top of the gallon jug. Carefully pour the grape juice mixture through the funnel and into the jug.

  3. Step 3

Place the balloon over the opening in the jug, securing it to the mouth of the jug by wrapping the rubber band around the balloon.

  4. Step 4

Place the jug in a dark place. Leave the jug alone until the balloon inflates and then completely deflates, signaling that that the sugar has fermented into alcohol. The process may take several days. Remove the balloon and serve the wine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Substitute any type of juice on hand for the grape juice (except for citrus juice) to make different flavors of alcoholic beverage.
  • Do not serve this to children, as it contains alcohol.
