So you got a free shirt at a ball game, but the problem is it's a man's size XXL and you're a 130 lb. woman. It happens all the time. But there is a way to take that oversized man's tee and turn into a wearable, cute halter top without ever touching a sewing machine.

Instructions

  1. Making the Halter Top

    • 1

Lay the shirt out flat and cut up from under to the sleeve to 1 or 2 inches from the collar on either side.

    • 2

Put on the shirt and pull it tight to the desired fit and mark this point.

    • 3

Mark the shirt's length so that it rests comfortably on your hips.

    • 4

Take off the shirt and cut along the bottom line to shorten the length. Cut horizontal strips along the sides up to the marked point.

    • 5

Tie the front and back strips together on either side and cut off any excess, so that the shirt's front and back are reconnected.

    • 6

Cut 1 inch horizontally along the collar's top to separate the collar's front and back.

    • 7

Cut horizontally along the shirt's back from just under where the left sleeve was, to just under where the right sleeve was.

    • 8

Cut a 2-ft. long, 1-inch wide strip from the excess cloth cut off the shirt and feed it through what is left of the collar to make a tie.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want a different look, cut a section of the shirt off from the back, and tie the strips up the back of the shirt instead. If you don't mind a little sewing, you can try sewing darts into the sides of the top for a more-secure fit that suits big-busted bodies more comfortably.

  • Always cut less and then test the fit. Once you cut too much, there is no way to fix it.
