1
Get a layered hair cut. This adds texture and depth to the hair. The shorter strands on top are lighter so they won't fall so flat onto the scalp.
-
2
Wash your hair with volumizing or clarifying shampoo and conditioner. Either version of these products help add volume by eliminating some of the residue left by most shampoos that weigh hair down. You can also try adding a teaspoon of baking soda to any shampoo to wash away excess residue and buildup.

Run a comb through your hair to get out knots and tangles. Flip your head upside down and comb gel or mousse (mousse is preferable for curly hair) through your hair. Blow dry your hair upside down. This will dry the roots away from your scalp so your hair doesn't fall flat. If you're satisfied with the hair, apply hair spray to hold it in place.

4
Use large rollers or another heated hair-styling device (either a large-barrel curling iron or straightener) to make the roots of the hair stand further away from the scalp. Experiment to determine what device works the best for you, depending on hair texture and length. Apply hair spray to hold hair in place.

Tips & Warnings
Products (such as Bumpits) exist that you can place under the top section of your hair to bump it up and make it appear fuller. They works well in creating volume at the crown of the head and can be worn in updos, half-up hairstyles, head-band styles, and even hair let down. If the hair is left down, you may need to use bobby pins or barrettes to secure the hair to keep the product hidden. Teasing your hair can add even more volume. However, this can cause hair breakage and should only be done when you're looking for extra big hair for a party or special event. Straighten hair and let it cool completely. Take a small section of hair and brush or pull hair with your fingers against the direction of growth to create a puff of height and volume. Spray with hair spray to hold the hair in place.
