  1. Step 1

Back up all data on the IBM notebook hard drive by burning the information to a set of CD-ROMs, or copying to an external hard drive.

  2. Step 2

Log off the computer and turn off the power.

  3. Step 3

Close the notebook and turn it upside down on a flat surface, disconnecting the power cord and all peripherals, including network connections.

  4. Step 4

Remove the rechargable battery by pushing the slide latch to the left and lifting it out.

  5. Step 5

Look for the hard drive cover on the edge of the right-hand side of the computer.

  6. Step 6

Remove the screw securing the hard drive cover to the notebook. The screw is on the bottom of the notebook cabinet on the right-hand corner.

Pull the hard drive straight up and out of the notebook.

  9. Step 9

Detach the hard drive cover from the hard drive by gently slipping the cover off the pins that secure it on both sides to the hard drive.
