How to Remove a Hard Drive From an IBM Notebook

IBM notebook computers contain a removable hard drive that can be serviced or replaced with a larger capacity hard drive. Swapping out the drive only takes a few minutes, but you do need to follow a specific procedure.

1. Back up all data on the IBM notebook hard drive by burning the information to a set of CD-ROMs, or copying to an external hard drive.

2. Log off the computer and turn off the power.

3. Close the notebook and turn it upside down on a flat surface, disconnecting the power cord and all peripherals, including network connections.

4. Remove the rechargable battery by pushing the slide latch to the left and lifting it out.

5. Look for the hard drive cover on the edge of the right-hand side of the computer.

6. Remove the screw securing the hard drive cover to the notebook. The screw is on the bottom of the notebook cabinet on the right-hand corner.

7. Open the display and set the computer on its left edge.

8. Pull the hard drive straight up and out of the notebook.

9. Detach the hard drive cover from the hard drive by gently slipping the cover off the pins that secure it on both sides to the hard drive.
