Question the Military Recruiter
Question the Military Recruiter
Mary R Vogt (morguefile)

Joining the military is a big decision and not to be taken lightly. One of the first steps to joining the military is to talk to a military recruiter at a military recruiting office. Find out what questions you should include in your interview with the recruiter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask questions about jobs. Each branch of the military has different military jobs available. Ask the recruiter about the jobs that are available, what your score on the ASVAB must be for your chosen job, how long and where training will occur and how the job equates to jobs in the civilian world.

  2. Step 2

Ask the military recruiter about pay when you enlist. Military pay is based on time in service and rank. When you first enlist in the military, your rank will probably be at a level of Private. Ask to see the pay scales for military members. Be sure to ask about special pays as well such as airborne and language pay if you qualify.

  3. Step 3

Ask about family life in the military. The military recruiter should provide additional information about pay if you have a family such as a housing allowance and separation allowance. In addition, the military recruiter should provide information about family support resources.

  4. Step 4

Ask about basic training. Find out from the recruiter where the training will be held, how long it will be and what you should expect on a normal training day. Discuss graduation and if you will be eligible for hometown recruiting after graduation. Find out when you can expect to ship to basic training.

  5. Step 5

Ask the military recruiter about physical fitness requirements. Each branch of service has basic physical fitness test requirements that you must meet to enlist as well as weight standards based on height.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cross check the recruiter’s answers with online military recruiters as well as others who you know are currently serving.
  • Don't leave the military recruiting station until all of your questions about enlisting have been answered.
